The Court of Protection is the legal body in England & Wales responsible for making decisions on financial or personal welfare matters for those who lack the mental capacity to decide for themselves. It is responsible for appointing deputies where no power of attorney has been granted, handling emergency applications and deciding on powers of attorney.

When someone you care about has lost the ability to make decisions for themselves you can apply to the Court of Protection for legal permission to make decisions on their behalf. There are many situations where you may wish to do this, from a parent suffering dementia through to a relative suffering long term or permanent effects from an injury.
